Curious facts about Cueva de Los Verdes
Among the various curious or historical data that we can highlight from this cave, we must tell you the fact that this cave was used as a hideout for the population that lived in Lanzarote against the invasions of pirates from Africa during the sixteenth and seventeenth century.
Centuries later, during the 19th century, it became a place of great interest to European scientists and geologists, as it is a cave with a very unique volcanic formation.
Do you know where its name comes from? This name was given to the cave thanks to the surname of the family that lived in the surroundings and kept their cattle in the area.
During the 1960s, the Cabildo of Lanzarote contacted the artist Jesús Soto to help adapt this natural cave into a place that would attract the attention of thousands of visitors from Europe and other parts of the world.
Today, the cave is completely conditioned to facilitate the entrance of tourists and all those interested, since even inside we can find an auditorium and different cultural corners that will undoubtedly be very interesting.
How much does it cost to visit Cueva de Los Verdes?
A ticket to visit Cueva de Los Verdes costs 9.50 euros for adults and 4.75 euros for children (between 7 and 12 years old).
For all Canarian residents, the price is 7.50 euros for adults and 3.80 euros for children.
For residents of Lanzarote, the price is 2 eur.
What are the visiting hours?
If you decide to visit the Cueva de Los Verdes, the opening hours are as follows
- Monday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm.
- In summer, from July 15th to September 15th, the schedule is from 10 to 18 hours.
- On December 24th and 31st, the closing time is at 4 pm.
What can you find inside the cave?
Previously, we mentioned that the cave is in a volcanic tunnel that is up to 6 km long, but the truth is that the tunnel that makes up the Cueva de Los Verdes is 1 km long in total.
Along this kilometer, we can find a beautiful network of galleries that are interconnected and conditioned for visitors. The whole route of the cave usually takes approximately 50 – 60 minutes.
The sensation of being inside the earth is unique, especially when you are inside a volcanic tunnel as unique as this cave. The interior of the galleries is about 50 m. high, and one of the unique characteristics of this tunnel is precisely its volcanic origin, since very few caves have this feature.
Thus, in this cave you can see stalactites formed by magma and salt deposits, as well as other magmatic formations that will undoubtedly leave you with the impression of having known a unique place in the world.
The colors of the cave are also quite special, giving the sensation of being inside a big dome. They have a reddish color with gray tones, similar to rusty iron.
Best of all, inside the cave we will find a very pleasant temperature of 20° C.
Are there any interesting places around Cueva de Los Verdes?
If you have more time than what is required to visit the cave, it is highly recommended that you also take the time to visit some of the places of interest that you can find in the surroundings.
You will be happy to know that the Jameos del Agua are located inside the same volcanic tunnel, so you will be able to get there very quickly.
A little further north you can find the Mirador del Rio, a place that is within an excellent natural terrain overlooking the Chinijo Archipelago and the island of La Graciosa.
Also, you will find some very quiet villages that are perfect for relaxing during the trip, making it possible for you to take advantage of the whole day to get to know new places and enjoy a good meal.
